DVD Review - S.P.A.M.
Style - Performance - Action - Music
A review by Christopher Curran

Filmed primarily during the 2004/2005 season, SPAM showcases some of the Tour’s top sailors and locations. Gran Canaria and Maui are prominently featured as are other hotspots such as Sylt, Klitmoeller, and Capetown. Much of the video is the result of the efforts of pro sailor, Robert Sand. Perhaps a slightly less well known sailor on the tour, he is nevertheless a highly capable sailor behind and in front of the camera lens. Overall the video is visually exciting, though it lacks some of the polish and flow of other videos that have been released over the last couple of years. Still, it is very watch able and entertaining.

SPAM begins in Maui and highlights the hard-charging style of legends like Jason Polakow, Levi Siver, Francisco Goya, Kauli Seadi, Keith Teboul, and many others. Some of the film’s best sailing footage takes place in the opening segments shot in Maui. It’s enough to make you want to book a ticket now and sample some of Maui’s action yourself.

The second segment takes us to Gran Canaria with some good action in both the wave and freestyle disciplines. Freestyle micro-wonder, Kiri Thode sessions the inside section in light winds throwing down Geckos, Grubbies, and other technical tricks with the style and athleticism of a sailor 10 years his senior. Some of the other freestyle footage seems a bit cobbled together, and the video quality is average.

The third segment takes place in Sylt with an uninspired interview with Nick Baker and Jason Polakow discussing the character of Sylt. They both appear to be very diplomatic in their description of the typical conditions found there. After all, these guys are used to sailing Hawaiian perfection! Also included in this segment is Scott Mc Kercher’s World Wave Title victory at Sylt in challenging conditions.

Segment four documents some fantastic Klitmoeller footage in very windy conditions. Jonas Ceballos and company sky unbelievably high backloops, stalled forwards and other big moves repeatedly in the salty froth. Many of the Klitmoeller regulars also make their mark in this film with impressive riding and jumping. Grubby is interviewed in this segment, though unfortunately the content of the interview is fairly dull.

The final Cape Town and Maui segments are very well done. The video seems to find a really nice groove, both visually and musically in the way it is edited. It’s unfortunate that the film makers couldn’t quite carry this great flow into the rest of the video.
In the Special features segment, Robert Sand gives some great insider’s knowledge on spots like Maui and South Africa.

Overall SPAM delivers an excellent mix of action and music, but it seems to occasionally wander a bit from what it does best: get you stoked to go sailing! Forced to criticize the film, I would say that the interview segments were best left out in my opinion. I must mention that it’s really only the fact that the first and last parts of the video are so good that the body of the video is noticeably less polished in comparison. However, SPAM is a worthy addition to any windsurfing addict’s collection.
Check it out !
